What Can Coeliac Gene Testing Help Identify?
This test can help to:
- Determine if you carry the HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8 genes associated with coeliac disease
- Rule out coeliac disease if these genes are absent
- Support diagnosis when blood test results are inconclusive
- Assist those already on a gluten-free diet who want to clarify their genetic risk
- Provide information for family members who may be at risk
Who Should Consider This Test?
Coeliac gene testing is recommended for individuals who:
- Have symptoms suggestive of coeliac disease but inconclusive blood tests
- Have started a gluten-free diet before completing standard testing
- Have a family history of coeliac disease or related autoimmune conditions
- Are at risk of nutrient deficiencies or digestive problems linked to gluten sensitivity
- Want to understand their genetic predisposition as part of a broader gut health assessment
How Is the Test Done?
This genetic test can either be a cheek swab to collect DNA, or a blood sample collected at a pathology lab. It is then sent to a lab where your genes are analysed for the presence of HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 variants.
How Are Results Used?
Results indicate whether you carry the genes associated with coeliac disease. If you do not carry these genes, coeliac disease can almost certainly be ruled out. If you do carry them, your practitioner will work with you to interpret these results in the context of symptoms and other testing, helping to guide further diagnostic steps or management strategies.
